Roman Consul Stakes Field
The season’s top three-year-old sprinters make-up the Roman Consul Stakes each spring and the line-up is dominated by local Sydney-trained runners.
Horses in the field may come via a number of earlier Sydney runs including the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m). The Golden Rose Stakes – Roman Consul Stakes double was most recently achieved by Exosphere (2015) and Zoustar (2013). Exosphere went on to run fourth in the Coolmore Stud Stakes in Melbourne behind that season’s Roman Consul Stakes third-placegetter Japonisme.

The previous spring Brazen Beau (2014) completed the Roman Consul Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double for the second year on the trot following Zoustar in 2013. In 2014 Delectation ran third in the Roman Consul Stakes before a second to his stablemate in the Coolmore Stud Stakes two runs later.
In 2012 the Roman Consul Stakes winner Jolie Bay ran second next start in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, as did Foxwedge in 2011. The other traditional Roman Consul Stakes lead-up run is Randwick’s Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) run on George Main Stakes Day in September, which produced the Godolphin-raced Viridine (2017) for his win.
The race’s nominations close on the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday followed by the final field of acceptances and barrier draw on the Wednesday.
