The Rosehill Gold Cup is one of the newer Special Condition races added to Rosehill Garden’s Golden Eagle Day race card on a Saturday in either late October or early November each spring racing season.

Contested in Sydney on the same day as Melbourne’s Victoria Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse – after which RV announced the official Melbourne Cup field and barriers – Golden Eagle Race Day is headlined by the $10 million The Golden Eagle for four-year-olds.
It is accompanied on the card by the $3 million Winners Stakes (1300m) renamed each season in honour of the previous year’s The Everest winner, the $500,000 The Four Pillars (1500m) taking place for the first time in 2021, and the $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup.
The Rosehill Gold Cup is run over 2000m under quality handicap conditions and is open to horses aged three-years-old and above. There is also an additional $500,000 bonus attached to the Rosehill Gold Cup from earlier Sydney Spring Racing Carnival races contested on two Saturdays across October / November – including a fortnight prior on The Everest Day.
The $500,000 Rosehill Gold Cup bonus is available to any horse that wins the event on the back of a lead-up win in either the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) or the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1800m), as well as either the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m), or the St Leger (2600m).
In 2021 Think It Over completed the Hill Stakes – Craven Plate – Rosehill Gold Cup treble to take out the million-dollar bonus.
Racing NSW also have a $100,000 bonus up for grabs for any galloper that contested, but did not win, any of the above four races before winning the Rosehill Gold Cup.
The 2000m distance of the Rosehill Gold Cup makes it an interesting target for both middle-distance types and more dour stayers making for an open field and betting market.
The 2023 edition of the Rosehill Gold Cup ran on Saturday November 4, 2023 and saw the Team Hawkes-trained eight-year-old Wild Planet ($26) score a narrow but impressive upset.

- To Win: #9 Stroke Of Luck ($6.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
A couple of genuine contenders in the Rosehill Gold Cup field this year but like the chances of the John O’Shea-trained Stroke Of Luck to post back-to-back wins after the Fastnet Rock four-year-old took out a Benchmark 88 at Randwick last time out. He carried 59kg to a 2000m win and will be airborne down to 52kg with Zac Lloyd (booked to ride Athabascan on Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup if the horse makes the field) also full of confidence with the light weight. Proven at the distance, is a multiple Group 1 performer and finished third in the Queensland Derby at blow out odds in the winter. Big claims here at a nice price.
