The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) and along with the Tristarc Stakes the other Group 2 features on the program are the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) and the Caulfield Sprint (1000m). Other features on the line-up include the Group 3 Moonga Stakes and Group 3 Ethereal Stakes for Oaks-bound fillies.
Run over 1400m under set weights plus penalties, the Tristarc Stakes is open only to mares aged four-years-old and above and offers $300,000 in total prize money.
The Tristarc Stakes makes a nice lead-up into the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The latest mares to complete the Tristarc Stakes – Empire Rose Stakes double are Red Tracer (2013) and Colette (2021).
The latest edition of the Tristarc Stakes ran on Saturday October 21, 2023 as part of Melbourne’s 2023 Caulfield Cup Day card with the consistent Wrote To Arataki ($6) leading all-the-way for her first Group 2 success.

Tristarc Stakes Betting
Tristarc Stakes betting odds are led each season by quality mares with proven Melbourne form, ability over 1400m – 1600m and those coming off a run in a lead-up race like the Blazer Stakes – now known as the Rose Of Kingston Stakes – or the Group 3 How Now Stakes held the month before. In 2022 beaten How Now Stakes favourite Chain Of Lightning improved on her third in that lead-up race to win the Tristarc Stakes next start.
Upsets are not uncommon however and recent winners to jump at double-figures in Tristarc Stakes betting include La Passe ($26 in 2015), Streama ($10 in 2012) and Madam Rouge ($10 in 2020).
Colette ($2.45 in 2021) was the last favourite in Tristarc Stakes betting to win.
Tristarc Stakes Tips
Good Tristarc Stakes tips include looking for a mare coming off a top three run in Group company, runners with winning form over the distance and Group 1 performers.
The favourites only have a fair strike rate in the race so looking further down the markets for a mare that ran well last time out at double figures is also a nice Tristarc Stakes betting tip to consider.

- To Win: #2 Skew Wiff ($5.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
This classy Kiwi raider carries a bit of weight, but she has been impressive with more across the Tasman previously and looks the one to beat here at a backable price. The Mark Walker-trained Savabeel four-year-old has been in terrific form with three of her past four runs at home being in Group 1 company. She placed second in two of them, both over the mile during the autumn, and she was last seen winning the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings on September 9. Travels down under now for a Group 2 over the same distance in a very winnable Caulfield Cup Day race for her.
Tristarc Stakes Field
The Tristarc Stakes race field attracts a collection of the season’s top middle-distance mares many eyeing a Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (formerly known as the Myer Classic) run over the mile on Derby Day a fortnight later.
The traditional lead-up into the Tristarc Stakes field is Flemington’s Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m) – formerly known as the Blazer Stakes – run over the same distance two weeks earlier.
Colette (2021) was the last mare to complete the Tristarc Stakes – Empire Rose Stakes double. Photo: Steve Hart.
La Passe (2015) was the last mare to complete the Blazer Stakes – Tristarc Stakes double. That same year Jessy Belle ran third in both races. More recently, Savatiano (2019) won the Tristarc Stakes improving on a lead-up fourth in the Blazer.
In 2023 Wrote To Arataki improved on a third in the Rose Of Kingston Stakes to win the Tristarc Stakes.
Many mares coming out of the Tristarc Stakes field go on to run in the Myer Classic. In 2014 Sweet Idea won the Group 2 before a second to Bonaria in the Myer Classic next start. That same year Catkins ran third in both races. Tristarc Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday followed by the final acceptances and barriers released on the Wednesday.
