Three runners, three different tracks. I’ve kept the blackbook short and sweet this week.
We’ll kick off at Eagle Farm where it’s Tattersall’s Tiara Day and I’m keen on Termagant in the second event.
The daughter of Deep Field was luckless when resuming over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast but she will have taken plenty of improvement from the outing. A late rider replacement saw Emily Lang take the mount and as she no longer has a provincial claim, the mare was forced to carry the full 62.5kgs.
Settling in the box seat, she travelled well but had nowhere to go until the final 150m, where she just struggled to pick up under the big weight in the soft conditions. A highly talented galloper, she’s now recorded five wins and three second placings from ten starts and the form around her is solid.
She does step up in grade but will certainly appreciate the big weight drop and the rise to 1200m suits.
The opener at Caulfield is a 1000m event for the juveniles.
Sonofkirk steps out for his second career start and I thought there was plenty of scope for improvement after his debut performance.
He did plenty wrong on down the Flemington straight but still closed off well to finish only .6 of a length away in third. The son of Ole Kirk, as his named suggests, came out of the gates awkwardly and then raced ungenerously for much of the event, even attempting to buck in the early part.
Still a colt, he will have taken plenty of benefit from the experience and I like that he’s getting onto a track with a bend, giving him a rail to follow.
Last but not least, I think Kazalark is worth following.
The Chris Waller trained gelding will line up in race 8 at Rosehill and looks ready to fire. He comes off a much-improved performance and I think he’ll relish stepping out to 1800m.
The five year old failed to figure in his first two runs back from a two and a half year layoff, over racing badly when resuming at Caulfield, he was eased down late and then out 1500m here, he again wanted to race keen and was always wide and exposed.
He settled a lot better last time and looked to be working into it well when he ran out of room late and went to the line untested. Only lightly raced, the gelding showed promise in his first campaign, winning well on debut before finished second in the Group 3 Spring Stakes.
With the three runs under his belt, he’ll be a lot more relaxed and fitness won’t be issue.
