2025 Might And Power Stakes Preview

2025 Might And Power Stakes Preview

The Might And Power Stakes is run over 2000m at Caulfield under weight-for-age conditions and is a launching pad for spring features including the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup

Formerly known as the Caulfield Stakes, the Group 1 event was first run in 1886 and has been won by some champions of the Australian turf including Bernborough (1946), Kingston Town (1981,82) and So You Think (2010).

A hot field has been assembled in the 2025 Might And Power Stakes and we have gone through every one of them below.

Don’t forget to check out our The Punters’ Playbook: Caulfield Spring Carnival Deep Dive for the inside word on the jockeys, trainers and races to watch over the following months!

1. Light Infantry Man (5) – Ciaron Maher

Odds: $14.00 (at time of publish)

Seven-year-old gelding who has competed at the top level for the majority of his career and in fact 17 of his 28 starts have been in Group 1s.

Was going much better in the autumn when he was placed in the All-Star Mile before coming out and winning the Australian Cup at this distance third up.

Would love to see Ethan Brown take a more forward position in such a small field similar to how he won the Northerly Stakes at Ascot last Summer.

2. Buckaroo (3) – Chris Waller

Odds: $2.60 (at time of publish)

Won the Group 1 Underwood Stakes last spring at this track and also finished second behind Duke De Sessa in the Caulfield Cup so he clearly loves it here!

Has been placed in both starts so far this campaign including an excellent second behind Sir Delius last start when beaten just half a length.

A repeat of that performance would see him go very close in this contest.

3. Hezashocka (4) – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr

Odds: $51.00 (at time of publish)

Is coming off a very disappointing winter campaign where he was unplaced in his last four starts including finishing 13 of 16 in the Listed Caloundra Cup

One win from 16 starts at 2000m, one from eight first up, and one placing from seven starts at Group 1 level.

Making up the numbers.

4. Globe (2) – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr

Odds: $7.00 (at time of publish)

Has finished second in two of his three starts this campaign and was beaten just half a length behind Golden Path in the other.

This will be his first go at any sort of group race, but he can roll straight to the front in a small field and be in it for a long way.

One for multiples.

5. Treasurethe Moment (1) – Matt Laurie

Odds: $1.75 (at time of publish)

Fell victim to the vicious front running style of Pride Of Jenni at The Valley two weeks ago but she wouldn’t be the first!

She chased gamely around the tight circuit that night and would have lost few admirers in the way she knuckled down to the task late.

This is a more suitable distance and I’m tipping she stamps her authority in this race and is a real threat in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate in two weeks.

  • 1st: No.5 Treasurethe Moment
  • 2nd: No. 2 Buckaroo
