The Lead-Up Lens: Runners and Races to Watch – Blue Diamond Prelude Edition

Group 1 Tracker: Which Blue Diamond Hopes are Rising?

Welcome to our new series punters – the Lead-Up Lens – where we take a look at the key lead-up runners and races to watch as we countdown to the autumn Group 1 races.

The Blue Diamond Preludes are the real form guide — if they don’t fire this weekend, they won’t be winning the Group 1. Watch who handles Caulfield under pressure and jump on the ones trending towards the Blue Diamond now, before the odds tighten.

It’s now the business end of the summer, and it is more crucial than ever to start watching some of the second-tier races as an early Group 1 form guide with the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival fast approaching.

Keep your fingers on the pulse, get the early inside word on the best horses with Group 1 potential and take advantage of our insider Autumn Carnival betting guide.

First cab off the rank, and this week we’re focused on the Blue Diamond Prelude races at Caulfield.

If the Blue Diamond Preludes were the “meet and greet”, this Saturday is where the real introductions begin.

We are officially two weeks out from the $2 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (Feb 21), and history tells us that if you aren’t firing in the Preludes, you’re likely just making up the numbers in the final.

The Heath is set to sizzle this weekend with two $350,000 races serving as the ultimate Blue Diamond form guide, and with a track known for its unique climbing turn into the straight, seeing which two-year-olds handle the pressure now is the best way to find your G1 winner.

Let’s dive into the Blue Diamond Preludes and see who is trending towards Group 1 glory.

2026 Blue Diamond Odds

Early Ladbrokes G1 Blue Diamond Market on Prelude Runners

The early Ladbrokes market for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes is currently being dominated by a pair of boom colts from the Price/Kent Jnr yard, but Saturday’s Preludes are expected to trigger a massive move in the market.

Unbeaten colt Guest House ($3.50) currently sits at the top of the G1 charts alongside his Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes winning stablemate Big Sky ($5), with Guest House looking to cement his status as the Diamond elect with a dominant showing in the C&G Prelude this weekend.

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic champ Unit Five ($9) is currently the other single-figure Blue Diamond fancy. High Alert ($11) meanwhile is the next shortest of Saturday’s Prelude runners in the outright markets for the big event.

Of the fillies in the G1 market, things are a bit more speculative ahead of Saturday’s lead-ups. Jacaranda ($13) is the shortest priced of the fillies but has been scratched from the Prelude this weekend.

The Prelude (F) favourite Streisand is also at $13 for the Group 1 feature with her price set to be slashed should she come out and salute for the punters breaking her maiden status.

Value lies in Moana Spirit ($15) who is undefeated and out to stay that way come Saturday’s Group 2, while the recent Preview upsetter Rubi’s Choice ($26) remains a subject of intense market scrutiny given her “Not Nominated” status.

Any single-figure winner on Saturday will likely see their $10+ G1 price slashed into the $4–$5 range before they even leave the mounting yard.

Remember, if there’s a two-year-old you like ahead of the Prelude races this weekend, now could be the time to back them in outright Blue Diamond betting as the Saturday results at Caulfield are sure to impact the Group 1 racing markets in a big way!

The History: Why the Prelude is the Only Guide You Need

If you’re looking for the Blue Diamond winner, history suggests you shouldn’t look much further than the Saturday results.

The Prelude-to-Diamond double is one of the most reliable trends in Australian racing.

  • The Double Achievers: Legends like Sepoy (2011), Earthquake (2014), and more recently Hayasugi (2024) all used the Prelude as their final stepping stone to G1 success.
  • The Heath Factor: Caulfield is a unique circuit; horses that struggle with the camber of the turn or the rise in the straight rarely improve in two weeks, meaning the Heath Factor we see this Saturday is almost certainly what we will see on the big day.
  • Recent Trends: In the last decade, over 60% of Blue Diamond winners finished in the top three of their respective Prelude lead-up.
  • Prelude Domination: 12 of the past 15 Diamond winners have come through a Prelude, 10 of them running top-two.

The Boys: The Search for the Next Sepoy

Caulfield Race 3 – Group 3 $350,000 Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (1100m)

The colts and geldings’ division looks a more open race this year than the markets suggest with an odds-on favourite, Guest House, dominating betting. But there is some serious other blue-blooded talent stepping out on Saturday to keep an eye on as they stake their claims.

The Key Runners

No. 3 GUEST HOUSE

Betting suggests the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained GUEST HOUSE (6) is the youngster to beat at a current odds-on quote of $1.95 to remain undefeated.

This well-bred son by top-line sprinter Home Affairs debuted at Cranbourne on December 27 and made an immediate impact saluting in a soft win as the heavily backed favourite by nearly a length with 59kg.

He did a few things wrong on the day but still picked up and put them away late, which is always the sign of a good one who’ll only improve off his first trip to the races.

Jamie Melham sticks aboard, he’s been kept fit with a subsequent winning Cranbourne jump out, and he comes back to 57kg at set weights in another plus.

Needs to take another step here, but he’s long profiled as the type who would only get better with racing and the punters are coming for him in a big way.

No. 2 ETERNAL WARRIOR

Eternal Warrior

ETERNAL WARRIOR (2) is an early market mover for the boys’ Blue Diamond Prelude and I’m happy to be on the money trail for this still over-priced juvenile.

The Extreme Warrior colt saluted here in the Listed Merson Cooper on debut back in late November last year at a ridiculous price and, while the winning margin was only a nostril flare, he did enough to suggest he’ll come on fitter and stronger this prep.

Solid lead-up trial at the Heath track in the interim, and I like Damian Lane – who rode him for that sharp hit-out – coming aboard on race day.

Will settle back from the gate but has the ability to run over the top of them late and remain unbeaten.

No. 6 HIGH ALERT

HIGH ALERT (5) racing second-up is out to break his maiden status and he’s an early market mover for Team Freedman.

Craig Williams knows how to get the best out of any horse and partners this promising Street Boss colt for the first time.

Luke Currie rode him on debut at Caulfield only on January 24 in the Preview when under a length back fourth to Alibaba in a run full of merit with zero luck.

He never got a look in during the Preview, stuck away in traffic in a messy run and only seeing daylight when it was all over — yet he still charged late.

That effort is easy to forgive, and he deserves another shot despite the form around that race being a touch questionable.

Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) Form Facts

  • Tagaloa (4th in the Prelude in 2020) became the first Blue Diamond winner since Nadeem (2006) not run top two in their lead-up run.
  • Favourites have a good strike-rate in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) including recent wins by Hanseatic ($2.30 in 2020) and General Beau ($3.10 in 2021).
  • Written By (2018) was the last to complete the Prelude / Blue Diamond double.
  • In 2025 the Blue Diamond Prelude runner-up Devil Night went on to score an upset Blue Diamond Stakes win at double-figures at his next start.
  • Barber (2023), who won the spring’s $1 million Golden Gift in Sydney, followed by the Team Snowden-trained Bodyguard (2024) are the latest first-up Blue Diamond Prelude winners.

The Fillies: Can the Rubi Shine Again?

Caulfield Race 4 – Group 2 $350,000 Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (1100m)

Saturday’s Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) serves as the high-stakes final rehearsal Blue Diamond, with history suggesting that the winner is likely currently hiding in this field.

The market is currently spearheaded by the fast-finishing Preview performer Streisand followed closely by the undefeated Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Moana Spirit chasing a hat-trick. But there looks value galore for punters willing to dive into the form a little deeper.

The Key Runners

No. 3 STREISAND

Following a couple of crucial early scratchings from the field we’ve a new favourite in the Prelude for fillies with the Clinton McDonald-trained STREISAND (5) now topping the markets.

Heavily backed in from $5 to $3.10 at time of publish, this progressive daughter of Magnus is well-tried having her fourth career run on the weekend and out to break her maiden status.

She was thrown in the deep end at Flemington on debut last October running a nostril-flare second to Eurocanto in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial before also finishing second by the barest of margins during the Cup Carnival at HQ behind Calamari Ring in the Inglis Banner.

She got this prep underway in the Preview running a credible fifth only 2.2 lengths off the winner Rubi’s Choice and she’s out to turn the tables now with Jamie Melham coming aboard.

Fitter for her resuming run, where she clocked the fastest closing splits, she now looks set to take another step getting out to the 1100m.

No. 2 MOANA SPIRIT

MOANA SPIRIT (4) puts her unbeaten record on the line chasing a hat-trick in the Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies on Saturday, and I think she lines-up as a big winning hope at good odds.

The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained trained youngster is a daughter of the 2020 Blue Diamond champ Tagaloa so is bred for this.

She saluted in Adelaide on debut by a big margin in early December before keeping the wins coming with her equally eye-catching two-length romp home in the Geelong Diamond at the start of January.

Kept fit with a subsequent trial at that same track and has Luke Currie sticking with for her toughest assignment yet.

A wide-open race, she’s got the record and the pedigree, will thrive on the Good going, and from a likely mid-field position looks a strong chance to race away late like she did last time out putting herself in the frame for the Group 1 on Feb 21.

No. 1 RUBI’S CHOICE

Rubi's Choice

RUBI’S CHOICE (10) is widely-drawn but not without support in the markets to remain undefeated and complete the Preview – Prelude double.

She went around at any old price on debut before making up ground from midfield to put nearly a length on the next best over the line in what is a key form reference for this Group 2.

She isn’t currently nominated for the Diamond, but after that professional “sit and steer” Preview victory, the connections are surely considering reaching for the chequebook. She reeled them in from fourth at the turn and looked like she had two gears left.

She’s safer in the markets now but still shapes up as potential value second-up and a danger from the Greg Eurell stable.

The attrition rate from the original field brings her in a couple of gates, she’s a well-bred daughter of Rubick and with Beau Mertens retaining the ride she has genuine claims.

Blue Diamond Prelude (F) Form Facts

  • Historically, favourites have a strong strike-rate in the race but Arcaded ($2.70 in 2021) was the last to salute for the punters in the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude.
  • Hayasugi (2024) was the last filly to complete the Prelude – Blue Diamond double.
  • Just two fillies have managed to win the Blue Diamond Preview – Blue Diamond Prelude – Blue Diamond Stakes treble with Midnight Fever (1987) and Hayasugi (2024) claiming all three events in their two-year-old seasons.
  • Palm Angel (5th in 2025) meanwhile was the last Prelude winning filly to come out of the Preview.

Punter’s Verdict

For the fillies, it is incredibly appealing to take Rubi’s Choice at $7. She has already shown she possesses the Caulfield sense and her ability to relax off the speed is a massive asset in high-pressure juvenile races. For the colts, keep a very close eye on Eternal Warrior also around that juicy $7 offering; he has the highest upside of this group and is perfectly placed to peak already being a Black-Type Caulfield winner.

Betting Strategy

Don’t wait for Diamond Day. Take the $26 on Rubi’s Choice for the Group 1 now. If she salutes on Saturday, that value will vanish and surely prompt connections to pay the late entry fee!
