Third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime confronts a tough second-round US Open draw in the shape of 2022 semifinalist Karen Khachanov.
The rivalry is square at 2-2. Khachanov won at the 2019 Canadian Masters and last year’s Halle Open, while Auger-Aliassime prevailed at the 2021 Cincinnati Masters and Den Bosch in 2022.
Auger-Aliassime was made to work hard in a 7-5 4-6 6-3 7-5 win over Rinky Hijikata in the first round, while Khachanov lost just four games in disposing of Roman Andres Burruchaga.
A US Open semifinalist in 2021 and 2025, Auger-Aliassime had a limited build-up after reaching the Wimbledon quarters, competing only at the Cincinnati Masters – where he was halted by Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16.
Khachanov slipped to No.50 after a dismal recent run that included a loss to Bernard Tomic at the Mifel Tennis Open and first-round exits at both ATP 1000 lead-in events. But he looks reenergised in New York.
After shaking off some rust, however, Auger-Aliassime should progress without too much discomfort as he looks to avoid a customary early exit. The Canadian has been eliminated in the first two rounds in 10 of the past 17 grand slams.
Prediction: BACK AUGER-ALIASSIME TO COVER THE GAMES HANDICAP (-4.5) @ $1.90
Aussie qualifier Tristan Schoolkate is aiming to reach the third round of a major for the first time when he takes on a top-10 player for the first time, US Open fifth seed Flavio Cobolli.
World No.180 Schoolkate won three qualifying matches before outlasting Nishesh Basavareddy 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 – his third straight first-round win at the US Open.
French Open runner-up Cobolli has already survived a major scare, coming from two sets down to beat Francisco Comesana 3-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-4.
The Italian arrived in New York with considerable momentum behind him, reaching the Cincinnati Masters semis. He reached the third round of the US Open in 2024 and ’25.
First-round jitters aside, Cobolli is in a different league and a couple of notable career firsts look to be beyond Schoolkate here.

Thirteenth seed Naomi Osaka’s bid for a third US Open title moves on to the second round, where she meets Czech veteran Katerina Siniakova.
Osaka leads the head-to-head 2-1, notching victories at the 2018 Qatar Open and Wimbledon in 2025 either side of Siniakova’s 2019 French Open win.
Osaka, who reached the semis here last year and made a career-best quarter-final run at Wimbledon a couple of months ago, had her work cut out in a 7-6 7-6 win over Anastasia Zakharova in the first round. She won the ace count 11-0 but dropped four games on serve.
World No.42 Siniakova demolished Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3 6-2 in the first round. She’s looking for consecutive wins at the same tournament for the first time since the Madrid Masters in April.
Doubles specialist Siniakova has not reached the third round of a major since Wimbledon in 2021.
Osaka came into the US Open in great touch – reaching the Citi Open semis and the Canadian Masters quarters – and should be able to find the extra level required to see off an experienced opponent in Siniakova.
Prediction: BACK OSAKA TO WIN 2-0 @ $1.72
On the comeback trail from injury, former grand slam finalist Qinwen Zheng takes on vastly experienced Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in the second round of the US Open.
Putintseva has a 2-0 advantage over Zheng, chalking up wins at the 2023 French Open and 2024 Madrid Masters.
The Australian Open runner-up in 2024 and a US Open quarterfinalist in 2023-24, Zheng tumbled out of the top 150 after a long layoff with elbow surgery. She worked her way back to No.121 but had to win three qualifiers to make the main draw here.
Zheng fought back to beat Kristina Liutova 4-6 6-3 6-1 in the first round – her first slam win since last year’s French Open.
Putintseva already has one significant scalp to her name in New York, eliminating 12th seed Belinda Bencic 4-6 7-5 6-3 in the first round.
Slipping to No.84 after cracking the top 20 for the first time last year, Putintseva was a US Open quarterfinalist in 2020 and made the last 16 of the Australian Open in January.
Her display against Bencic makes a compelling case for another upset with Zheng still trying to rediscover her rhythm.
