Golden Eagle Tips

Top Golden Eagle racing tips include looking for the winners of the Golden Slipper and Golden Rose from the two seasons prior, backing proven Group 1 horses and those with a good record over at least 1400m.

Another Golden Eagle tip is to watch the autumn carnival results and lock in the early Golden Eagle odds available on the winners of races including the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick and the now Group 1 The All-Star Mile run over 1600m in Victoria each March.

The Epsom Handicap proved the form line to follow into the 2019 Golden Eagle with the Chris Waller-trained Kolding doing the double and did so again in 2020 with the Godolphin-raced mare Colette improving on her sixth in the same Group 1 lead-up.

Autumn Glow (2025) was the last runner to complete the Epsom Handicap – Golden Eagle double.

Ladbrokes Tip: The Golden Eagle odds for this spring are likely to be led by any visiting international raiders with good European form!

2026 Golden Eagle Predictions & Best Bets

Our expert team of tipsters will provide the 2026 Golden Eagle betting tips below closer to the day so stay tuned for the sprinters to back and sack this spring.

Once the final field has been accepted and finalised we will be placing our top tips and selections for the Golden Eagle here.

Early Golden Eagle 2026 Predictions

  • Sheza Alibi and Autumn Boy look perfectly placed for the 1500m feature.
  • Both have the right age profile and proven Sydney form.

Early 2026 Golden Eagle Favourite: Sheza Alibi

Sheza Alibi has taken early control of the 2026 Golden Eagle betting market, shaping as the filly best suited to the Randwick 1500m thanks to her booming finish, ideal distance profile and strong Sydney form lines through the Epsom. She thrives when the tempo is genuinely run but can get buried in traffic if the field stacks up, making race shape crucial in a big Golden Eagle line‑up. A Good 4 surface would play perfectly to her pattern, and with her form trending upward, she stands out as a compelling early Golden Eagle futures option.

Tip: Back horses with Epsom form lines — they translate well to the Eagle.

Early Ladbrokes Prediction: Sheza Alibi to win the Golden Eagle, Autumn Boy to place.

Announced as part of the 2019 Sydney Spring Carnival, The Golden Eagle now is the third-richest race in Australia after The Everest and the now $10.2 Melbourne Cup race, and the first feature race held exclusively for four-year-olds.

Offering $10 million in prize money following a boost ahead of the 2022 edition – 10% of which is donated to charity – The Golden Eagle was designed to rival Victoria’s Flemington Derby Day while also offering more prize money than the world’s richest two-mile handicap – the Melbourne Cup run on the first Tuesday of November annually.

There are no big four-year-old races held over the Melbourne Cup Carnival allowing Racing NSW to create The Golden Eagle and draw some of the attention away from their rivals down south.

The Golden Eagle race is contested over 1500m – previously run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse but moved to Randwick in 2025 – and the four-year-olds face off at set weights.

Since 2025 the Golden Eagle is held at Royal Randwick instead of its earlier home at Rosehill Gardens due to a strategic decision by Racing NSW to elevate the race’s profile within Sydney’s Spring Carnival.

The move aligns the $10 million race with other marquee events like The Everest, Spring Champion Stakes, and the Big Dance, creating a four-week blockbuster carnival at Randwick. Racing NSW cited the race’s growing international prestige—highlighted by eight of the top 12 finishers from 2024 going on to win Group 1 races globally—and its status as NSW’s second most-wagered race as key reasons for the relocation.

The Golden Eagle follows in the tradition of Sydney’s lucrative Golden Slipper (1200m) for two-year-old horses and the Golden Rose (1400m) open to three-year-olds. There is an incredible $5 million bonus prize to any horse that completes the “Golden Slam” winning the Slipper – Rose – Eagle treble during their early years on the racetrack.

It takes place three days before Melbourne Cup Day and is held on the same date as Flemington’s Victoria Derby Day program.

Golden Eagle Day is now a massive event with Racing NSW also adding the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (formerly the Winners Stakes), $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) and the $500,000 The Four Pillars (1500m).

The Golden Eagle 2022 field limit was also increased from 18 to 20 starters the week of the race.

Golden Eagle Betting

Golden Eagle betting is led by the best performed four-year-old horses of the season.

Before the Horse’s Birthday on August 1 when all racehorses in Australia officially turn one-year-older, Golden Eagle betting markets are dominated by gun three-year-olds who performed well in the previous year’s feature races. Any rising four-year-olds that have beaten the older horses in Group 1 company feature highly in Golden Eagle racing odds.

I’m Thunderstruck ($3.50 in 2021) became the first favourite in Golden Eagle betting to win.

There was a notable upset by the international raider Lake Forest in 2024 who saluted at Golden Eagle odds of $19.

Autumn Glow ($1.75 in 2025) was the last Golden Eagle favourite to salute for the punters.

The Golden Eagle Field

The Golden Eagle race field features the season’s top four-year-old horses, many of which may have previously been heading to stud instead of racing on for another season.

The Golden Eagle race field attracts many of the same gallopers that contested Sydney’s Golden Slipper Stakes as juveniles and or the Golden Rose Stakes as a three-year-old.

One of the first early lead-up races for mares heading towards The Golden Eagle field is Randwick’s Group 3 Toy Show Quality run in August, the 2019 winner of which Mizzy went on to finish third in that year’s Golden Eagle trifecta.

Good lead-up races into The Golden Eagle field for the better performed four-year-olds of the season include the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick, and Caulfield’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) held at Caulfield in early October. In 2021 I’m Thunderstruck completed the interstate Toorak Handicap – Golden Eagle race double. In 2022 I Wish I Win improved on a fifth in the Toorak to win the $10 million Golden Eagle.

In 2025, Autumn Glow won the Toy Show Quality, Theo Marks Stakes, Epsom Handicap and Golden Eagle on the trot.

Horses that contest The Golden Eagle as four-year-olds are likely to return the following spring for a shot at the $2 million The Five Diamonds (1800m) held for the first time in 2022 at Rosehill (moved to Randwick in 2025) on the Saturday after The Big Dance.

The Golden Eagle field limit was increased to 20 starters the week of the 2022 edition.

2026 Golden Eagle Ballot Exemptions

The horses that run first, second and third in the Epsom Handicap and Silver Eagle are exempt from ballot, as are the winner/s of the previous running of the Golden Rose, Randwick Guineas and Arrowfield Sprint.

2026 Golden Eagle Field

The official Golden Eagle 2026 field and barriers will be announced the week of the race and published in full below.

Following nominations on The Golden Eagle in early September, the final declarations revealing the starting line-up close at 9am (AEDT) on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Golden Eagle Barrier Draw 2026

The 2026 Golden Eagle final field and barriers are announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Barriers are drawn randomly for the 20-horse field, and with the Golden Eagle moving from Rosehill to Randwick in 2025, the barriers have become slightly less important. The race starts down a chute, so runners drawing wide have more time to find cover.

That’s important when making your Golden Eagle picks, so if your runner gets barrier 20, it’s not race over.

Golden Eagle Barrier Statistics

Historically, the best Golden Eagle barrier to draw is 8. It has produced three winners since the inception of this race in 2019, including the 2024 winner, Lake Forest, and most recently Autumn Glow in 2025.

It’s the only barrier to have won three Golden Eagles, with barriers 2, 4, 6, and 10 winning the other editions. There hasn’t been a winner draw outside 10, but the likes of Lazzat (12) and Makarena (20) ran second and fourth in 2024.

Surprisingly, barriers 1, 3, 5, and 7 have yet to produce a winner. They are regarded as some of the best barriers in Australian horse racing, but it shows how even the Golden Eagle is, and punters can find a winner no matter where they draw.

2026 Golden Eagle Nominations

Early The Golden Eagle 2026 nominations are taken on Monday the 7th of September 2026.

The 2026 Golden Eagle nominations attracted 112 early entries led in betting by Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman’s Randwick Guineas – Doncaster Mile winner from the autumn, Sheza Alibi.

Golden Eagle Form Guide

The Golden Eagle race form guide lists the full line-up of four-year-old runners, their connections (owner / jockey / trainer) that stand to win one of Australian racing’s biggest prizes and gives a rundown on their lead-up form / career statistics.

Using the Golden Eagle form guide to look for the horses proven at the track, those with a good record over the distance and the Group 1 winners in the mix that are racing well that Sydney Spring Racing Carnival can help punters place a winning bet on the $10 million feature.

The Golden Eagle form from 2021 stacked-up with the winner I’m Thunderstruck going on to run second in Melbourne’s The All-Star Mile and Sydney’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile the following autumn in 2022.

The 2022 Golden Eagle form was franked with the winner I Wish I Win returning in the autumn for a strong Group 1 campaign that included two elite level Melbourne placings and a win in Sydney’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

The 2024 Golden Eagle form was franked with the third placed Tom Kitten going on to win the 2025 Group 1 All-Star Mile the following March.

Autumn Glow, the 2025 Golden Eagle winner, returned even better the following season, turning that formline into one of the most reliable guides for punters. She came back in the 2026 autumn and swept through three straight victories, headlined by her elite‑level wins in the Verry Elleegant Stakes and George Ryder Stakes, before kicking off her spring with a polished performance in the Winx Stakes. Her record not only underlines her class but also reinforces the strength of the Golden Eagle as a launching pad for genuine top‑tier performers — a key angle for punters assessing the new wave of four‑year‑olds.

2026 Golden Eagle Form

A link to our detailed Golden Eagle 2026 form guide will be available below the week leading-up to the country’s second richest race.

Golden Eagle Bet Types

Win – The most basic type of bet. Put your money straight up on the runner that you think will win the Golden Eagle.

Place – Pick the horse that you think will finish in the top three positions but at lower odds.

Each-Way – Put equal amounts on a horse for the win and a place, the equivalent of two bets and you get paid out for both if it wins.

Quinella – Bet on the horses you think will finish first and second in either order. You can also pick for example one horse to finish 1st and then a combination The fewer horses you pick the greater the dividend.

Exacta – An exacta also involves choosing horses that you think will finish first and second but it differs from a quinella in that it has to be the exact order you specify in the bet.

Trifecta – Very similar to an Exacta, but for the first, second and third placings in the correct finishing order. You can also Box Trifecta to finish in any of the first 3 combinations.

First Four – A First Four bet works the same as an Exacta and Trifecta but for the first four runners in finishing order.

Past Golden Eagle Results

As well as listing the complete Golden Eagle finishing order the official Golden Eagle race results show the trainer and jockey of each horse as well as the margin between each place, the weight they carried and their starting price in the betting markets.

The inaugural champion Kolding holds the current Golden Eagle race record winning in 2001 in a time of 1 minute 28:28 seconds.

Colette (2020) and Autumn Glow (2025) are the latest Golden Eagle winning mares.

In 2023 the Japanese-trained Obamburumai became the first international The Golden Eagle winner.

There was another internationally trained Golden Eagle winner in 2024 with the UK’s Lake Forest defeating French raider Lazzat.

Chris Waller secured his second Golden Eagle success becoming the first the first two-time champion with Autumn Glow in 2025.
