To Win: No. 6 Treasurethe Moment
TREASURETHE MOMENT (1) returns to the Feehan Stakes after a minor colic setback, and there’s no concern from the camp as she resumes her dominant run as a short-priced favourite. The four-year-old daughter of Alabama Express, trained by Matt Laurie, has won her last nine starts with dazzling versatility and class, and while this marks her first outing at The Valley, she’s earned every bit of her quote. Her fresh win in the Memsie Stakes was emphatic—putting a gap on Mr Brightside, who then claimed the Makybe Diva for a third time—and she’ll only improve stepping up in trip. Already two-from-two at the mile, she drops in grade, draws perfectly on the rails, and with Mark Zahra taking over, she’s poised to stalk the speed and pounce late. Expect fireworks—she’s the one to beat.

The Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes – now known as the John F. Feehan Stakes and previously as the Ladbrokes Feehan Stakes due to sponsorship – is a Group 2 race held in September at Moonee Valley Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
In 2024 the Feehan Stakes date moved to late September running under the lights on Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Night.

A mile clash contested over 1600m under weight-for-age conditions, the race ran as the John F Fehan Stakes from 1984 – 2004 and has reverted back to its original name.
The John Feehan Stakes offers a total of $500,000 in prize money having had its stakes doubled in 2021 and currently runs on the same program as the Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m), Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m), Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m), and the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes (1200m).
It is a nice spring starting point for gallopers targeting Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) back at Moonee Valley in late October.
The last winner to go on and take out the Cox Plate was El Segundo (2007).
Dual Cox Plate winners Fields Of Omagh (2002), Northerly (2001) and the mighty New Zealand-trained mare Sunline (2000) also all have their name on the John F. Feehan Stakes winners’ list.
The John F. Feehan Stakes previously served as a key lead-up into the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) held at Caulfield before being moved in 2024. Homesman (2nd in 2018) was the last Underwood Stakes winner to come out of the John F. Feehan Stakes, a race he won the following year (2019) before a second in the Underwood.
In 2020 dual Cox Plate placegetter Humidor made a stunning return in his first run for Chris Waller to win the John F. Feehan Stakes before a next-up Underwood Stakes second and third in that year’s Caulfield Stakes results.
Pride Of Jenni (2024 & 2025) became history’s sixth dual Feehan Stakes champion.

John F. Feehan Stakes Betting
John F. Feehan Stakes betting odds are led by proven weight-for-age performers racing first or second-up in the mile showdown who have good records when fresh.
Previous experience at the tight Moonee Valley circuit and runners that have a strong record over 1600m – 2000m also feature highly up the Feehan Stakes betting markets each spring.
Single-figure hopefuls have a strong record in the event including the recent wins by Homesman ($5 in 2019), Superstorm ($6 in 2021), and Pinstriped ($8 in 2023).
There was a notable upset in 2020 however when two-time Cox Plate placegetter Humidor won the event at Feehan Stakes odds of 17/1.
Mr Brightside ($1.65 in 2022) and Pride Of Jenni ($1.90 in 2024) are the latest favourites in Feehan Stakes betting to salute for the punters.
Pride Of Jenni returned to win again in 2025 at $3.60 defeating the beaten favourite Treasurethe Moment ($1.50).
John F. Feehan Stakes Field

The John F. Feehan Stakes race field features a classy line-up of weight-for-age, Cox Plate hopes.
Many are kicking off their spring campaigns in the mile clash and are heading towards tougher spring assignments including the Cox Plate.
One lead-up into the race is the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) run at Caulfield in mid-August. Mr Brightside (2022) was the last horse to complete the PB Lawrence Stakes – Feehan Stakes double.
Pinstriped (2nd in 2023) meanwhile was the last Feehan Stakes winner to come off a run in the PB Lawrence Stakes which was won that year by the previous season’s Feehan champ Mr Brightside.
Another possible lead-up run into the Group 2 is the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in late August, a race the 2013 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Fiorente ran sixth in first-up. Fiorente went on to place third in that year’s Cox Plate before his victory in the iconic Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.
