The underrated Phillip Stokes trained filly Snow Mercy ($26) survived a protest to post back-to-back wins when handling a notable rise in grade to take out the 2025 Scarborough Stakes results at The Valley on Friday night.

Ridden off the pace by Lachlan Neindorf, she got the run she needed after the turn for home when narrowly getting through to run over the top of them late and salute by three-quarters of a length.

A protest was launched by the luckless runner-up Memo, but it was ultimately dismissed, and Snow Mercy retained her upset Group 3 success.

Scarborough Stakes Tips

Good Scarborough Stakes betting tips to take in the spring include looking at fillies with ability at the track and distance, previous Group winners, past winners over the 1200m distance and those coming off lead-up runs in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes.

Single figure hopefuls have a dominant recent record in the race, so another useful tip is to pick a runner in the top half of the markets.

2025 Scarborough Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Scarborough Stakes tips and Moonee Valley Group 3 betting selections will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the mares to get behind in the race this spring.

To Win: No. 1 La Dorada

LA DORADA (9), a classy Kiwi Group 1 winner trained by Mark Walker, looks well placed to rebound at a generous price after a luckless first-up run in the Group 1 Moir. The Super Seth filly, a four-time winner from six starts, now steps up to her preferred 1200m trip where she holds a strong record (3:2-1-0). Her Moir effort was compromised by interference in a messy race, but she appeared to handle The Valley well and the run was better than it reads on paper. While she rises in weight, she drops sharply in grade and returns to set weights against her own age and sex. With Craig Williams, a proven big-race rider, taking the reins, expect sharp improvement—she’s overs and a genuine threat.

The Scarborough Stakes – registered as the MVRC Champagne Stakes – is a Group 3 race for three-year-old fillies contested on Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Night at Moonee Valley on a Friday evening in late September or early October during the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Racing at the meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) for sprinters. The other key support races on the card include the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) for the Cox Plate-bound gallopers, Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) for Caulfield Guineas types, and the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) for the mares.

When referred to by its registered name (MVRC Champagne Stakes) this event should not be confused with the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) for two-year-olds held in Sydney during the autumn.

Offering $200,000 in total prize money the Scarborough Stakes is run over 1200m at set weights and serves as a nice lead-up into Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) held during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

In 2020 the Scarborough Stakes winning filly Swats That ran second in the Coolmore Stud Stakes quinella and also finished third to Nature Strip the following autumn in the 2021 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning.

The 2021 Scarborough Stakes form was franked with the winner Seradess returning the following winter to win Morphettville’s Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes in 2022.

In 2024 Bellatrix Star won the Scarborough Stakes and the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes before a third in that year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes trifecta.
