Gimcrack Stakes 2023

Ladbrokes Tip: The Gimcrack Stakes makes a nice lead-up into the $1 million Golden Gift race.

The Gimcrack Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old fillies run and won at Randwick Racecourse in early October.

The event takes place as part of Randwick’s bumper Epsom Handicap Day race card. Epsom Day features a triple shot of Group 1 racing with the running of the $1.5 million Epsom Handicap (1600m), $750,000 The Metropolitan (2400m) and the $750,000 Flight Stakes (1600m).

Also on the card is the Group 2 $1 million Premiere Stakes (1200m) for The Everest hopefuls.

The Gimcrack Stakes is contested at set weights over 1000m and offers $250,000 in prize money as of 2023.

The race was first held back in 1906 and is named in honour of 18th century champion English racehorse Gimcrack.

The Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) for colts and geldings on the same day is the other opening two-year-old race of the season in Sydney.

Two-year-olds out of the Gimcrack Stakes often head towards the $1 million Golden Gift later in the spring.

The latest edition of the Gimcrack Stakes ran on Saturday September 30, 2023 on Epsom Handicap Day as the season’s opening 2YO race for fillies in NSW and was won in an upset by the Tommy Berry-ridden Tassort filly Manaal ($19).

The Gimcrack Stakes is traditionally the debut run for new-season fillies. Gimcrack Stakes betting markets are then usually led by fillies that performed well in recent lead-up trials.

The Gimcrack Stakes odds on any fillies with previous race experience and any non-maidens in the event are kept short.

Enthaar ($1.60 in 2020) and Coolangatta ($2.50 in 2021) are the latest favourites in Gimcrack Stakes betting to win.

There was a notable upset in 2022 with Platinum Jubilee winning at Gimcrack Stakes odds of $10 ahead of her stablemate, beaten favourite Perfect Proposal ($3.40).

Another upset followed in 2023 with Manaal saluted at $19.

  • To Win: #6 Lady Of Camelot ($2.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Debutant races always tough, but happy to stick with the favourite here who was impressive winning her lead-up trial over 850m at the Kensington track by four lengths. 1000m to kick off her career looks ideal and the Waterhouse/Bott stable will have her presented lovely for race day. Nicely-bred daughter of Written Tycoon can work into it from barrier seven and they’ve put the best hoop J. Mac on suggesting she’s their best chance.
