The Gimcrack Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old fillies run and won at Randwick Racecourse in early October.

The event takes place as part of Randwick’s bumper Epsom Handicap Day race card. Epsom Day features a triple shot of Group 1 racing with the running of the $1.5 million Epsom Handicap (1600m), $750,000 The Metropolitan (2400m), and the $750,000 Flight Stakes (1600m).

Also on the card is the Group 2 $1 million Premiere Stakes (1200m) for The Everest hopefuls.

The Gimcrack Stakes is contested at set weights over 1000m and offers $250,000 in prize money as of 2023.

The race was first held back in 1906 and is named in honour of 18th century champion English racehorse Gimcrack.

The Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) for colts and geldings on the same day is the other opening two-year-old race of the season in Sydney.

Two-year-olds out of the Gimcrack Stakes often head towards the $1 million Golden Gift later in the spring.

The latest edition of the Gimcrack Stakes ran on Saturday October 5, 2024 on Epsom Handicap Day as the season’s opening 2YO race for fillies in NSW and was won in a stylish front-running performance by the John Thompson-trained Bel Merci ($3.50F).
