Ladbrokes Tip: The Todman Stakes – Golden Slipper double is a popular betting exotic in the autumn.
The Todman Stakes, formerly known as the Todman Slipper Trial, is a Group 2 race for two-year-old colts and geldings held on Randwick Guineas Day at Royal Randwick during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Contested on a Saturday in early to mid March each season the set weights event is a key support act at a meeting that also hosts the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).
The Todman Stakes offers $300,000 in prize money including $170,000 to the winner and takes place over a 1200m sprint distance. It is the male juveniles’ equivalent of the Group 2 $300,000 Reisling Stakes (1200m) for the fillies and both races are traditional lead-ups to the Group 1 $4.92 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) run a fortnight later.
The Todman Stakes winner is exempt from Golden Slipper Stakes ballot and the double was most recently achieved by Farnan (2020), Vancouver (2015), and Pierro (2012).
In 2021 the Todman winner Anamoe ran second in the Golden Slipper before winning the Group 1 Inglis’ Sires that autumn. He also went on to win the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in the autumn and place second in the Golden Rose Stakes and Cox Plate that campaign.
The latest edition of the Todman Stakes took place on Saturday March 9, 2024 on Randwick Guineas Day 2024 and was won by Chris Waller’s unbeaten and progressive son of Snitzel Switzerland ($3.60).

- To Win: #3 Straight Charge ($2.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Cracking line-up in the Todman with a host of last start winners looking to keep the momentum rolling into the Group 1 Golden Slipper, but happy to stick with the favourite here. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Written By colt is two-from-three now and proven at Randwick having won here by nearly four lengths back in December. Franked that with a rise in grade to easily account for his rivals in the Group 2 Silver Slipper at Rosehill last time out. Expecting him to keep ticking over and salute again up in distance now but with the rails run and proven going on Soft ground. Wins.
