Tramway Stakes 2024

Ladbrokes Tip: The Tramway Stakes is a key Epsom Handicap lead-up in the spring.

The Tramway Stakes, formerly the Tramway Handicap, is a Group 2 race held on Chelmsford Stakes Day at Royal Randwick Racecourse in early September during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The meeting is host to a trio of Group 2 races with the Tramway Stakes running on the same card as the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and the Furious Stakes (1200m). There is also an early $20 million The Everest lead-up race held on Chelmsford Stakes Day in the form of the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m).

Previously run under handicap conditions and known as the Tramway Handicap the race is now a set weights plus penalties clash contested over 1400m and offers a total of $300,000 in prize money as of 2023.

The Tramway Stakes is a key early spring lead-up for gallopers heading to bigger and better races over the carnival including the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m) previously run as the George Main Stakes before being renamed and moved ahead of the 2023 edition.

The last horse to complete the Tramway Stakes – George Main Stakes double was Sincero (2011). The Tramway winner is also exempt from ballot for the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) back at the track in early October.

In 2020 the Chris Waller-trained Kolding improved on his lead-up second in the Tramway behind dual champion Dreamforce to win the George Main Stakes next start.

Hauraki (2016) was the latest galloper to win the Tramway Stakes – Epsom Handicap double, the galloper finishing runner-up in the George Main between those two spring wins.

Zaaki is one of the more famous Tramway Stakes winnings going back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.

The latest edition of the Tramway Stakes ran on Saturday September 7, 2024 at Royal Randwick Racecourse and saw the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained US import, Royal Patronage ($16), make an immediate impact down under ahead of the spring majors.

Tramway Stakes Betting

The Tramway Stakes odds are led each year by horses with previous good Sydney form from past campaigns. Until recently the favourites had a poor recent record in the race up before back-to-back wins by Dreamforce who started top of the odds ($3.30) in both 2019 and 2020 followed by Zaaki ($2.30 in 2021 and $1.90 in 2022) who also dually saluted for the punters.

There was another upset Tramway Stakes result in 2024 with the import Royal Patronage saluting at $16 in his first run down under.

Runners that came off a nice earlier run at the track in the Winx Stakes also often feature high up the Tramway Stakes betting markets.

Any horses that are dominating early Epsom Handicap betting that spring often also tend to be at shorter Tramway Stakes odds for a lead-up run into the mile feature.

The Tramway Stakes race field attracts a quality line-up of strong middle-distance gallopers and milers looking to head into races like the George Main (now King Charles III Stakes) and Epsom Handicap also run at Randwick in the spring.

Many horses contest the Tramway Stakes first-up in their spring preparation or come off an earlier spring run in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at the same track and distance in August.

Following a run in the Tramway Stakes field horses may return to Randwick a fortnight later for a shot at the $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m) held on The Shorts Day for the first time in 2023 in place of the George Main Stakes.

Tramway Stakes Tips

Good Tramway Stakes tips to take include looking for horses with a good Randwick record, runners that have winning form over 1400m – 1600m, gallopers that have previous Group 1 race experience from past campaigns, and those at double-figures with the favourites failing to have a strong recent record.

Another Tramway Stakes betting tip is to look at the mares in the mix with a number of female gallopers finishing in the money over the years.

Multiple Group 2 placed Frosted mare looks in a lovely race now to get her own victory at this level on the CV. The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained four-year-old hasn’t won since October last year, but her run fresh in the Group 2 Missile Stakes at this level was good seeing her run a very close second with improvement to come now with the first run done and dusted.

The Tramway Stakes form has also stacked up in the upcoming Group 1 races of the spring in recent years. In 2015 the Tramway Stakes runner-up Ecuador went on to finish second to Winx in the Epsom Handicap two runs later.

The previous year (2014) Lucia Valentina won the Tramway Stakes first-up before heading to Melbourne where two runs later she took out the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington and placed third in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

In 2013 Royal Descent ran third to Malavio in the Tramway Stakes before a second to Streama in the George Main Stakes next start.

More recently, dual Tramway Stakes winner Dreamforce went on to run third and second respectively in the George Main Stakes results of 2019 and 2020.

In 2021 the Tramway Stakes winner Zaaki went on to win the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) next-up in Melbourne before a Caulfield Stakes third. He was scratched from the Cox Plate field as the favourite on race day morning before atoning during the Melbourne Cup Carnival with a consolation win in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m). Zaaki also returned for a strong 2022 autumn campaign that included a win in the $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m).

Zaaki went back-to-back in both the Tramway Stakes and Mackinnon Stakes (run as the VRC Champions Stakes) in 2022.

Pericles won the Tramway in 2023 and franked the form with subsequent second placings in that spring’s $10 million Golden Eagle, the 2024 Futurity Stakes in Melbourne, and the 2024 Doncaster Mile.
