Following the Winx Stakes in Sydney last week, it’s Melbourne’s turn to see the return of Group 1 racing this Saturday!
Caulfield plays host to Memsie Stakes Day, and the time-honoured feature race headlines ten strong betting races, as the Spring Carnival continues to ramp up.
Read on for this week’s Caulfield best bets, including our 2026 Memsie Stakes tips.
ENVIABLE can bounce back on Memsie Stakes Day at nice odds.
After returning to action to break her maiden at Newcastle last month, Enviable saw good market support in BM78 company at Rosehill at her second run back but finished at the tail of the field.
Having gone back to the trials, she switched back to the Victorian way of going, and if she can recapture some of the form that saw her only just miss in Group 2 company last spring, she’ll be mighty competitive in something like this.
| 7. Enviable (10) J: James McDonald 58.5kg 42×17T: Chris Waller | |||
| Third-up today. Resuming favourite; came from midfield and won by 2.5 len at Newcastle on July 14 over 1400m on a rain affected track defeating Hellfighter carrying 57kg at $1.12. Second-up sat behind the speed prior to fading to run last of 7 in a F&M Bm78 at Rosehill on August 1 over 1400m, slow going 5.5 len behind Aye Aye Captain carrying 58.5kg at $2.50. Can do a lot better. | |||
JENNI MULTABELLA has turned in some fine performances this time in.
She’s yet to miss placing in three runs back from a break, and after winning in BM70 company over 1400m at Sandown second up, she was only just denied when getting out to the mile last time out.
There’s no doubting her fitness this week, while the extra furlong looks to suit at this point of her preparation.
| 14. Jenni Multabella (10) J: Jamie Melham 53.5kg 6×312T: Lloyd Kennewell | |||
| Recent form sound. At the latest run 2nd of 11 in a F&M Bm74 at Caulfield Heath on August 8 over 1600m, on a slow track; nose behind Davida carrying 57kg at $4.60. Before that won by 1.5 len at Sandown-Hillside on July 22 over 1400m on a soft track defeating Flying Mikki with 54.5kg at $9. Should go close with even luck. | |||
SAINT GEORGE takes winning form into this contest.
He is six weeks between starts, but Saint George saw good late interest in betting ahead of the BM100 contest over 2000m at Flemington back in July and didn’t disappoint; mustering a superior turn of foot to comfortably win the race.
He’s been back to the trials ahead of this contest and at around the $9 mark, he rates as a key chance once more.
| 2. Saint George (8) J: Mark Zahra 61.5kg 14×41T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Third-up today and won third-up previously. Comes off a 42 day let-up. First-up 4th of 11 in a Davidbourke at Flemington on June 20 over 1620m, on a slow track; 3 len behind Seafall with 57.5kg at $8. Second-up favourite; won by 1.3 len at Flemington on July 18 over 2000m on a soft track defeating Smokin’ Romans carrying 58.5kg at $4. Well placed. Rock solid and will take beating again. | |||
CRUISERWEIGHT was a late scratching last weekend and will instead contest Race 4 on Memsie Stakes Day 2026.
Having recorded a dominant win on debut in France on New Year’s Eve, Cruiserweight hit the ground running in Australia with two dominant victories first and second up.
He suffered his first defeat when faced with too much to do from back in the pack at Caulfield last time out, but he’s another one that has been back to the trials, he’s got plenty of upside and is drawn perfectly this week with Ethan Brown jumping into the saddle.
| 19. Cruiserweight (4) J: Ethan Brown 55kg 1×114T: Ben, Will & Jd Hayes | |||
| Racing well recently. Returns from a 35-day let-up. Most recently sat on the speed and boxed on steadily 4th of 11 in a 3yo Hcp at this track on July 25 over 1400m, slow going 2.5 len behind Lauberhorn carrying 58.5kg at $1.80. The race before that favourite; settled well back; won by 1.0 len at this track on July 11 over 1400m on a soft track defeating Celtics with 54kg at $3. An inside draw is a big advantage. Scratched at gates last week but still profiles well. | |||
The former Cockram Stakes has drawn a typically open field of mares including SALTY PEARL, who looks to be one of the better each way bets of the day in my opinion ($16 at publish).
Salty Pearl hasn’t been seen at the races since April, but she was a consistent performer in strong black type races last time in, finding form around some quality opposition in the process.
She’s missed placing just once in four previous fresh attempts and while she’ll certainly improve for whatever she does produce here, she’s clearly capable of a sharp fresh effort.
| 2. Salty Pearl (8) J: Ben Allen 59kg 3135xT: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Is first-up after a break of four-and-a-half months and has been in the money when fresh before. Finished off last campaign fifth of 16 at Morphettville in the G1 A’asian Oaks April 25 over 2000m, 4 len behind Panova carrying 56kg at $4.60. First up last campaign third of 9 at this track in the G3 Manfred January 24 over 1200m, 1.0 len behind Space Rider carrying 57kg at $5. Good mare, watch betting. | |||
This is an outstanding race with some genuinely good sprinters engaged, but I am keen to be with the resuming favourite, OLIVEANOTHERDAY.
Oliveanotherday was outstanding last time in, recording four wins from as many starts and continuing to improve with each appearance, culminating in a dominant win in the Wangoom Handicap at the ‘Bool.
Two recent trials have suggested he’s only improved and with a view toward some strong targets this time in, he can hit the ground running this week in The Heath 1100 Stakes.
| 3. Oliveanotherday (1) J: Harry Coffey 58kg 1111xT: Tom Dabernig | |||
| Gelding returning from a spell and has won previously when first up. Finished off last preparation won by 2.5 len Warrnambool LR Wangoom May 6 over 1200m on heavy track defeating Immortal Star with 54kg at $2.80. Previous preparation first-up favourite; to post a big 5 len win. Ballarat Bm70 February 22 over 1200m defeating Foxenberg carrying 55.5kg at $1.95. Keeps raising the bar and can do so again here. | |||
UNIT FIVE was scratched ahead of his return at Sandown last week and will instead launch in Saturday’s McNeil Stakes.
We haven’t seen the son of Supido at the races since February, but after winning the Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic on debut in December, he went up to Queensland and added the lucrative Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast to his CV.
The Blue Diamond Stakes could have been an afterthought, and he finished down the order, but he has trialled up very well again and can build on his unbeaten fresh record.
| 2. Unit Five (6) J: Thomas Stockdale 58kg 110xT: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Resuming. Finished off last preparation tenth of 16 at this track in the G1 Blue Diamond February 21 over 1200m, 4.5 len behind Streisand with 57kg at $5. At his first start won by 2.5 len Caulfield Heath Mm 2yo Classic December 20 over 1100m defeating Ko Phangan carrying 58kg at $2.70. Talented, if he’s come on he’ll take beating. | |||
The Memsie Stakes is always a fascinating Group 1 contest, but with a case to be made for most of the horses engaged in this year’s edition, we’re set for a particularly memorable edition at Caulfield on Saturday.
All things considered, ANGEL CAPITAL hunts his first win at the highest level and with natural improvement, I simply do not think he’ll get a better opportunity than this.
He’s been knocking on the door throughout his career, and while Angel Capital didn’t break through for that elusive Group 1 victory during his autumn prep this year, he ran big races to place in both the Newmarket and the William Reid most notably.
Outside of the winner, I thought he was the run of the race in the Missile Stakes when resuming a fortnight ago, keeping his best work for late and hitting the line, and there’s no doubt he’ll be better second up and out to the 1400m.
Ben Melham knows him well and takes the ride from an ideal draw.
| 5. Angel Capital (5) J: Ben Melham 59kg 326×3T: Chris Waller | |||
| Second run back. First-up after four months came home strongly from last on the turn; 3rd of 7 in the G2 Missile Stakes at Randwick on August 8 over 1200m, 2 len behind Ninja carrying 57.5kg at $2.20. Previously second-up 3rd of 14 in the G1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on March 7 over 1200m, 1.0 len behind Caballus carrying 56kg at $12. Much better suited this trip, frustrating but he’s good enough. | |||
The Heatherlie Stakes is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating races on Memsie Stakes Day 2026 with plenty of storylines meetings, but I am ultimately keen to be with YELLOW JERSEY at just his second Australian appearance.
The former French galloper has only made five appearances at the races, but he has more than stamped himself as one to follow by winning three times and placing as many, debuting in Australia to plenty of hype at Eagle Farm in June and finishing a close second behind War Eternal in the Wayne Wilson.
His two trials ahead of this spring preparation have been excellent and launching over the 1700m this week, he looks very well placed.
| 10. Yellow Jersey (7) J: Mark Zahra 59kg x3x2xT: Tony & Calvin Mcevoy | |||
| Resuming. Only had one start last preparation sat on the pace when 2nd of 11 in a LR The Wayne Wilson at Eagle Farm on June 13 over 1600m, in the wet; long-neck behind War Eternal carrying 59kg at $2.60. First up last campaign 3rd of 7 in the G2 Prix Du Conseil De Paris at Longchamp on October 19 over 2200m, 0.6 len behind Convergent with 55.5kg at $3.20. Won trial at Caulfield Heath over 1000m on August 15. Looks forward enough after a recent trial win. Did plenty wrong at local debut, sets up | |||
SASS APPEAL is second up, in winning form and open to plenty of improvement.
The So You Think mare has won five of six starts since debuting, only just missing on the other occasion and finding form around some quality opposition in the process.
Her fresh performance to get up over 1410m at Flemington was full of merit and with natural improvement, I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish again this week. She’s my best bet on the program.
| 11. Sass Appeal (10) J: Logan Bates 54.5kg 111×1T: Danny O’brien | |||
| Second-up. First-up after five months favourite; won by 0.8 len at Flemington on August 1 over 1410m defeating Rise At Dawn with 51.5kg at $1.45. Previously second-up favourite; won by 1.3 len at Seymour on December 28 over 1400m defeating Forever Jo with 56kg at $1.85. Fitter this time around and can continue her winning ways. Leading contender. | |||
