Ladbrokes Tip: The Eskimo Prince Stakes serves as a nice early lead-up into the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) each autumn.
The Eskimo Prince Stakes is a Group 3 sprint race conducted in either late January or early February as a lead-up into the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Run at set weights plus penalties, the event is open only to three-year-olds and offers $250,000 in prize money.
Contested over 1200m, the Eskimo Prince Stakes was first run in 1984 and gained Group 3 status in 2015.
Having been run and won over various racecourses around Sydney, it currently takes place at Royal Randwick Racecourse as the sole Group status race on the standalone card.
The event is named in honour of the 1964 Golden Slipper Stakes winner Eskimo Prince.
Horses that do well in the Eskimo Prince Stakes may have bigger autumn targets in sight including the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) in March.
Kementari (2018) was the last horse to complete the Eskimo Prince Stakes – Randwick Guineas double.
In 2022 Converge improved on a third in the Eskimo Prince Stakes results to win the Randwick Guineas and run second in that year’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
The 2023 Randwick Guineas also came via a lead-up run in the Eskimo Prince with Communist improving on his third in the Group 3.
The latest edition of the Eskimo Prince Stakes ran on Saturday February 10, 2024 at Royal Randwick Racecourse and was won in style by the now Bjorn Baker-trained Caballus ($7) who is two-from-two for the stable after transferring from Chris Waller.

Eskimo Prince Stakes Tips
Eskimo Stakes tips include backing previous Group winners in the mix, looking for the horse with a good Randwick strike-rate and steering clear of the fillies who have a dismal recent record against the colts and geldings in this race.
Any gallopers that raced in Group 1 company during the previous spring also make a good Eskimo Prince Stakes betting tip as do those proven over more distance but that are resuming over the 1200m.
2024 Eskimo Prince Stakes Tips
Our expert Eskimo Prince Stakes 2024 tips will be available below the week of the race so stay tuned.
- To Win: #1 Griff ($5 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Open edition of the Eskimo Prince with plenty of consistent hopefuls getting their autumn bids underway including the Ciaron Maher-trained Griff. This Trapeze Artist colt won three on the trot during an outstanding spring campaign including of course the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m). He took that out by nearly two lengths in a 30/1 upset. Sydney form earlier not quite as strong, but is a class horse that has trialled well and looks a big hope to pick up where he left off.
Eskimo Prince Stakes Form Guide
The Eskimo Prince Stakes form guide details all of the key race information including the jockeys, trainers and lead-up races of the runners in the mix along with their barrier draws and weights. Looking at the Eskimo Prince Stakes form for first-up three-year-olds that have a previous win in similar class races on their record is a good tip.
The Eskimo Prince Stakes form has held up in tougher grade autumn races many times over the years including in 2022 when the winner Paulele ran third in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) that prep, finished runner-up in both the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) and Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) in Brisbane, before winning Perth’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) that November.
