Lee Steere Stakes 2023

Ladbrokes Tip: The Lee Steere Stakes is the ideal Railway Stakes lead-up in Perth each summer

The Lee Steere Stakes is a Group 2 race run at Ascot Racecourse in early November during the annual Perth Summer Racing Carnival. Contested on the same day as Flemington’s VRC Champions Stakes Day races in Melbourne, the Lee Steere Stakes offers $300,000 in total prize money as of 2023.

Run over 1400m, the weight-for-age clash is the traditional lead-up to the tougher summer races in W.A. over the summer including the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m), which was formerly the Kingston Town Stakes.

The last horse to win the Lee Steere Stakes – Railway Stakes double in the same year was Belle Bizarre (2006). More recently Luckygray won the 2012 Lee Steere Stakes between his 2011 and 2013 Railway Stakes victories, while in 2017 Great Shot improved on a Lee Steere Stakes second to score an upset win in the Railway Stakes. In 2018 the Lee Steere Stakes form again held with the winner Gatting finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Railway.

The next edition of the Lee Steere Stakes runs on Saturday November 11, 2023.

Lee Steere Stakes Betting

Lee Steere Stakes odds are released after the field is announced the Wednesday of race week and are dominated by local gallopers with a strong record at the Ascot track in similar class.

Runners proven over the 1400m distance and that come off a good lead-up in a race like the Eurythmic Stakes (formerly the Northerly Stakes) also sit high up the Lee Steere Stakes betting markets each season. Massimo (2nd in 2021 and 3rd in 2022) was the last Eurythmic Stakes graduate to back-up and win the Lee Steere Stakes on successive years.

Single-figure hopes in the Lee Steere Stakes betting markets have a dominant record in the race with Early Express ($31) back in 2003 the last double-figure winner before the upset of Gatting ($41) in 2018. The roughies were back in winning form for the 2019 Lee Steere Stakes too as Star Exhibit won at $41!

Massimo ($3 in 2022 for second victory was the last favourite in Lee Steere Stakes betting to win.

Lee Steere Stakes Field

The Lee Steere Stakes race field attracts a quality line-up of Perth’s premier middle-distance gallopers as well as interstate raiders that could be gearing up for the Railway Stakes and Kingston Town Stakes in WA over the summer.

A traditional lead-up race into the Lee Steere Stakes field is the Group 3 Eurythmic Stakes (1400m) – formerly the Northerly Stakes – at the track in late October and Black Heart Bart (2015) followed by Silverstream (2017) are the last horses to complete the double.

Another possible lead-up race also run at Ascot Racecourse in late October is the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m). Runners out of the Lee Steere Stakes field also may drop back in distance for Perth’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) a fortnight later and the Lee Steere – Winterbottom double was last achieved by Magnifisio (2014). Magnifisio also ran second to Black Heart Bart in the following year’s Lee Steere Stakes.

Lee Steere Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race runs that Saturday with the final field and barriers released on the Wednesday.

Lee Steere Stakes Tips

Lee Steere Stakes tips to take to the bookies in the spring – summer season include looking for a single-figure hope in betting that has good form at the track / distance and for the top graduates out of that year’s Eurythmic Stakes.

It is also worth looking at the previous year’s place-getters when doing the Lee Steere Stakes tips as many horses run in the money in multiple editions of the race including Tarzi who ran second three years straight (2008-10). The 2018 winner Gatting also returned 12 months on to finish runner-up behind Star Exhibit in the 2019 Lee Steere Stakes results.

Another good Lee Steere Stakes betting tip is to take runners under $10 in the markets and any odds-on favourite in the race who have saluting for the punters many times over the past 10 years or so.
