We found two placegetters at good odds in our roughie tips last Saturday including Rumbled Again who paid a nice price when runner-up in Caulfield’s Eclipse Stakes.

This weekend we’re keeping it short and sweet with three Black-Type races in three states including the year’s final Group 1 down under – Perth’s Northerly Stakes – where one has jumped out of the form guide at a big price!

Ballarat Race 9 (5:05PM AEDT) – Listed $500,000 Ballarat Cup (2000m)

No. 15 Ghetto Supastar ($61 at time of publish)

GHETTO SUPASTAR (10) is one of the rank outsiders in Victoria’s Ballarat Cup but Mick Shepherdson’s Street Boss six-year-old shapes up as a genuine Top 3 chance for mine.

Saturday has him return to Ballarat for just the second time and, while he’s yet to win over further than a mile, four of his six 2000m efforts to date have produced a podium finish.

He comes off back-to-back thirds including going down under a length as a $15 pop behind Party Crasher in a BM80 over this distance at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day in front of the rowdy crowd – which he handled well – making up plenty of late ground when last on the turn for home.

At his latest he went down three lengths behind Howlin’ Rain in the Moe Cup (2050m) on a hard track.

Better with the give out of the ground, he’ll get conditions to suit on Saturday with a Soft course likely.

Another jockey change has Teo Nugent come aboard on 54kg.

Yes, this is a notable class rise, and he’ll need to dig deep, but with blinkers going on I think he’ll be taken back from the gate and has the fitness to charge home late and go past a few at blowout odds.

Doomben Race 8 (5:32PM AEDT) – Group 3 $200,000 Ladbrokes George Moore Stakes (1200m)

No. 4 Lubrication ($17 at time of publish)

Competitive George Moore pending in Brisbane but for value, LUBRICATION (7) racing second-up off a strong resuming run has caught my attention.

Matthew Dunn’s consistent I Am Invincible six-year-old rarely runs a bad race and has plenty of top three performances at the Doomben track behind him (14:3-2-3).

Winner of The Archer at Rockhampton in record time during the winter, he failed a class rise when dead last behind Front Page in this year’s Group 2 Moreton Cup but showed improvement first-up at this track and trip on November 15.

With 57kg he crossed a nostril flare second behind Caspernova in a Class 6 and presents fitter and ready to fire now.

Has won second-up previously and drops down a kilo in on 56.5kg with Andrew Mallyon – who has an impressive strike-rate for Dunn – coming aboard.

Should land somewhere towards the back but maps well to make up ground the closing stages and outrun his price.

Ascot Race 9 (8:00PM AEDT) – Group 1 $1,500,000 Northerly Stakes (1800m)

No. 16 Pure Excess ($18 at time of publish)

PURE EXCESS (15) flies under the radar heading into the Group 1 Northerly Stakes in WA but the record of three-year-old fillies in this Perth feature speaks for itself.

In the past 10 years, three-year-old fillies have won four times, most recently with Amelia’s Jewel in 2022.

The hot favourite is Dan Morton’s undefeated WA Guineas winner KING OF LIGHT (8) and I’m on him for the win, but PURE EXCESS hails from the same trainer and I love an in-form roughie pick to follow a better fancied stablemate over the line.

She’ll be absolutely airborne in on just 50kg at WFA having carried 56kg last time out to narrowly deny her fellow fillies in the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes over the mile here breaking her maiden status.

Was third the start before over 1400m only a length off the Listed Burgess Queen winner at 30/1 and is underrated again despite proving herself last time out and looking suited to the extra furlong up to 1800m now.

Steven Parnham sticks aboard having ridden her for her latest two, but he’ll face a bit of a task from the nasty barrier 15 draw.

If Parnham can find a spot midfield with a bit of cover but not get caught in the hustle, the weight relief and confidence from her November 15 win puts this filly in the mix.
