The Memsie Stakes is one of the great races on the Australian thoroughbred calendar, and some of the greatest thoroughbreds have won the Group 1 race.

The Memsie Stakes is a race every trainer, owner, and jockey wants to win. The early spring Group 1 is a stepping stone to greatness, and that’s shown by the recent winners’ list.

As you can see, it takes a good horse to win the Memsie Stakes. Some of Australia’s most loved thoroughbreds have won the race, including Treasurethe Moment, Mr Brightside, Atlantic Jewel, and Miss Finland.
It has been a good race for mares over the last 20-30 years, with numerous winners, but strong male horses also have a good record, with the likes of Behemoth, Mr Brightside, and Black Heart Bart making a big impact on this race.
The Memsie Stakes is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious weight-for-age horse races. First run at Caulfield in 1899, it was won by Veneda and was originally contested over a longer distance. The race has been held over 1,400 metres since 1980 and was elevated from Group 2 to Group 1 status in 2013, and it has since become one of the most prestigious Group 1 races on the calendar.
Notable Memsie Stakes Winners
There is a long and rich history of the Memsie Stakes, and we’re turning back time to look at some of the most popular winners from yesteryear.
Look no further than Sunline, who won back-to-back Memsie Stakes in 2000 and 2001, with her win in 2000 coming before she won the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley later in the season. The Kiwi mare was a standout winner of the Memsie Stakes, and it’s a race she made her own.
Another mare to win the Memsie Stakes was the legendary Makybe Diva, who scored in 2005. She won three consecutive Melbourne Cups, and she often kicked off her prep over 1400m in the Memsie Stakes.
It’s an outstanding list of past winners, and we haven’t talked about the likes of Naturalism, Rubiton, Manikato, and Lord. They all won the Memsie Stakes, with Lord winning four consecutive Memsie Stakes in 1958-1961.
Rising Fast, Comic Court, and Galilee have all won the Memsie Stakes. That’s an impressive past winners’ list, and that’s why it’s such a respected race on the Melbourne Spring Carnival calendar.
