Ladbrokes Tip: The Ming Dynasty Quality serves as a potential Group 1 Golden Rose lead-up
The Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality is a 1400m middle distance showdown for three-year-olds run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse* in August each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The race is a quality handicap event and offers $160,000 in total prize money and was upgraded from a Group 3 race in 2013.
*Note: The 2021 Ming Dynasty Quality moved from Rosehill to Kembla Grange Racecourse due to COVID-19.
The Ming Dynasty Quality is one of the day’s feature races and is accompanied on the card by the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) also for three-year-olds and the Group 3 Premier’s Cup, while Melbourne’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes takes place on the same date at Caulfield.
The race is named in honour of dual Caulfield Cup hero Ming Dynasty (1977, 1980).
Three-year-olds in the Ming Dynasty Quality field are often heading towards tougher events for their age group over the spring including the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back at the track in September and the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne each October.
Lonhro (2001) and Kenwood Melody (1998) are the last horses to complete the Ming Dynasty Quality – Caulfield Guineas double.
Many nice horses have won the Ming Dynasty Quality over the years including subsequent star stallion Lonhro (2001), the ill-fated Lion Tamer (2010) and Quick Thinker (2019) who won the following year’s Group 1 ATC Derby.
The latest edition of the Ming Dynasty Quality ran on Saturday August 28th, 2021 and Kembla Grange Racecourse having been moved from Rosehill due to COVID-19 and was won by the Chris Waller-trained favourite Coastwatch.

Ming Dynasty Quality Field
The Ming Dynasty Quality field attracts a class line-up of the season’s most exciting young middle-distance horses, many of which contested Group 1 events as juveniles such as the Golden Slipper Stakes at the same track over the autumn.
Most three-year-olds are racing in the event first-up and are heading towards upcoming events including the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) or longer-distanced events including Melbourne’s Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m). Lion Tamer (2010) was the last horse to do the Ming Dynasty Quality – Victoria Derby double.
The Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) makes a nice lead-up into the Ming Dynasty Quality field with Holyfield (6th in 2020) followed by Coastwatch (2nd in 2021) are the latest Ming Dynasty winners to come out of that race.
The Ming Dynasty Quality nominations close the Monday of race week followed by final acceptances on the Wednesday.

- To Win: #3 Arnaqueur ($4.80 at time of publish)
Small and open edition of the Ming Dynasty with a likely Heavy-rated track halving the number of contenders from the nominations. Decent price on offer for the in-form Arnaqueur coming off a narrow win at the Kembla Grange track. Hasn’t raced on anything worse than Good so that’s the query, but was competitive in tough races as a two-year-old including the Fernhill (4th) and a midfield finish in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the mile at Randwick. Can surprise.
