Punters that followed our roughie tips last weekend enjoyed a near clean sweep with four of our five picks running Top 4 including Soothsayer (2nd in the Tramway), Beadman who ran third in the Concorde as a 30/1 outsider in the markets and Cavalry Girl (2nd in the Group 1 Moir).
So, can we continue our good form this weekend?
We’re treated to a cracking Flemington card as HQ welcomes back elite level racing with the WFA stars lining up in the Makybe Diva Stakes while further north Rosehill hosts another premiere Run To The Rose Day card where there’s value galore to be found.

Flemington Race 5 – Value Star to Shine

It’s a wide-open edition of the Lexus Archer Stakes offering a ballot exemption for the Melbourne Cup field, but with so many single-figure fancies one overlooked in the markets with each way appeal is the Paul Preusker-trained SUFFOLK STAR (6) resuming.
The British-bred seven-year-old is an out-and-out stayer so the 2500m fresh is perfect and, should he make the starting line-up on the first Tuesday of November, he’ll eat up the two miles.
Went back-to-back at Sandown over 3000m carrying plenty of weight in the autumn and facing some decent quality rivals before stepping up in grade on May 16.
He attempted to gain a Golden Ticket to the Cup via the Listed Andrew Ramsden (2800m) here at HQ, his to date sole start at Flemington, and was far from disgraced at 30/1 finishing under two lengths fourth to Zakomua.
From five first-up runs he’s a triple placegetter, he handles this course, the trip is right within his wheelhouse, and I love that a Caulfield Cup winning jockey in Michael Dee comes aboard for the ride.
Will be airborne back from 58.5kg last time out to just 54kg here, will settle back and launch late obviously getting better the further he goes but he was scratched from a race in Adelaide for this so I’m happy to put a little something on him to place.

Rosehill Race 6 – Roughie Hosting Potential
No. 10 Hostwin King
Plenty of progressive three-year-olds in the Ming Dynasty field on Saturday including HOSTWIN KING (8) who at $23 (at time of publish) looks enormous value to return to his best.
Tommy Wong’s King’s Legacy colt is a two-time winner from four starts in easier grade, and he presents fit third-up on Saturday having shown nice improvement at his latest.
Fresh he was seventh in The Rosebud behind Chilly Girl in a race proving to be a good form line for the spring’s 3YO events, including from this guy who relished the 1300m second-up to round out the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes trifecta here on August 29.
He had only 53kg when a length behind the winner Plagiarism boxing on well off an on-speed run and he gets that nice weight relief from the higher-rated chances again here.
Love him up to the 1400m now with the fitness edge, he’ll likely cross and sit up on the speed again and, if he doesn’t burn too much energy from the wide gate early doing so, can hang on as an underrated hope again.

| At the latest run raced on the speed and boxed on steadily 3rd of 10 in the G3 Up and Coming Stakes at this track on August 29 over 1300m, 1.4 len behind Plagiarism with 53kg at $17. Before that 7th of 13 in a LR The Rosebud at this track on August 15 over 1100m, slow going 3.5 len behind Chilly Girl carrying 54kg at $26. Finds a few better today. Underrated colt who will need a good ride from the draw. | |||
Rosehill Race 7 – Case to Be Made
No. 10 Plaintiff
PLAINTIFF (8) faces some better seasoned, multiple Group 1 winning mares in the Sheraco but fresh paying $10 (at time of publish) she has definite appeal for the wider exotics and looks top value for her return.
The Peter Snowden-trained Zoustar four-year-old remains untapped with Saturday marking just her sixth career start, and she’s already put together a very tidy record.
Four-from-five with a second at her latest behind Snitzel Dancer under a length beaten in the Group 3 James HB Carr Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 18 puts her right up there.
Oozes potential, she secured a Group 3 win of her own defeating Nepo Baby in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) during ‘The Championships’ with a sweeping last-to-first run and Rosehill has been a happy hunting ground for her as she’s won both her previous assignments here.
Unbeaten fresh, she’s been trialling a treat and the set weights plus penalties conditions suit as she’ll carry 55kg.
Chad Schofield has ridden her to victory here in the past and has been aboard for her two lead-up trials to reacquaint himself with this potential Group 1 runner in the making.
Continues to rise to the occasion and gets conditions to suit.
Can surprise a few here.

Flemington Race 7 – Hedging Our Bets
No. 3 Hedged
Good line-up of sprinters in the Bobbie Lewis and odds-on favourite Oliveanotherday will be tough to deny, but for the wider exotics HEDGED (3) from a favourable alley second-up has potential.
Trainer Gavin Bedggood has experience with nice sprinters and this Capitalist six-year-old has been one of them.
As a younger horse with the Price/Kent stable he was up there matching the likes of Joliestar with a Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint second back in 2024, and he’s kept up the consistency since moving to Bedggood’s care.
Back in the autumn he was an upset two-length winner of the Group 2 Australia Stakes, ran third to Oak Hill only 1.5 lengths beaten in the Group 2 Rubiton and finished runner-up at a big price behind Tropicus in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.
His Group 1 The Galaxy run at Rosehill back in March for sixth to Marhoona was a blanket finish with only 0.39 lengths between him and the winner.
Resumed at Sandown on August 22 in the Group 3 Norman Carlyon for fifth to Cavalry Girl on a Heavy (8) track where the conditions and 1000m weren’t to his liking and too sharp respectively.
Firmer going now, fitter for the run and better suited to the six furlongs he can improve with Blake Shinn aboard in another tick.

Rosehill Race 8 – Firing First-Up Value
No. 1 Fireball
We’ve got a stellar ensemble for the 2026 Run To The Rose and a lovely contingent of three-year-olds for Waller including the returning Group 1 Champagne Stakes champ FIREBALL (9) who at 40/1 shouldn’t be forgotten.
Obviously the talented Snitzel colt will improve off whatever he does here deeper into his prep when he gets up in trip, but he’s a $2 million earner with plenty of class and has actually won over 1100m before in February’s lucrative Inglis Millennium.
Never far off them when out of the money, was strong over the Randwick mile back in April to get his elite level on the CV and is undefeated fresh with two previous wins when resuming.
His Champagne winning jockey Tim Clark reunites and on class alone I’m skeptical to rule him out of a Top 4 finish.

Flemington Race 8 – Treasure of a Price
No. 10 Treasurethe Moment
The double figure quote on Matt Laurie’s darling TREASURETHE MOMENT (10) certainly appeals considering the consistent five-year-old Alabama Express mare is a four-time Group 1 champion and Flemington specialist.
From a VRC Oaks victory in 2024 to a 2.5 length win over Mr Brightside in the 2025 Memsie Stakes, she knows how to win at elite level and has incredible versatility.
She’s not been first past the post since saluting as the odds-on favourite by a big margin second-up in the autumn’s Group 2 Sunline Stakes at Caulfield, but her fourth in the Memsie to get her spring underway was full credible considering she was knocked around a little inside the final furlong and she’s sure to appreciate a return to Headquarters where she’s won three of her four previous Flemington assignments.
Second run into her prep is always a sweet spot for her (5:4-1-0), Damian Lane knows her very well and she looks the improver heading into this.
From the wider gate she’ll bounce out, likely take up front running and ticks a few boxes to take some running down.

Rosehill Race 9 – Magnetic Roughie
No. 8 Magnatear
The Richard & Will Freedman-trained MAGNATEAR (1) is first-up from the inside alley in the Theo Marks Stakes field ticking a few boxes as a $16 shot to get things underway for the spring with a good run.
The now seven-year-old son of Written Tycoon has had three previous Rosehill runs for a trio of third placings and the 1300m for him resuming is spot on.
Yet to win first-up but has placed in three of his five starts at this stage previously and has been trialling well.
Tougher line-up than what he’s used to, but he did go out a winner on March 27 claiming a narrow win in the Muswellbrook Gold Cup (1500m) so knows how to find the line when asked.
Ashley Morgan knows him well and the 54kg allocation keeps him in contention.
From barrier one he’ll bounce out and likely go for the lead and can hold a few off late to hang on for a Top 4 performance.

Flemington Race 9 – Too Darn Appealing
No. 3 Too Darn Discreet
Plenty of high-class mares in the Let’s Elope Stakes field and, after such a strong finish to her last campaign, TOO DARN DISCREET (11) at $23 looks overs even from the wide gate.
The Dan O’Sullivan-trained daughter of Too Darn Hot is nicely bred, is a triple winner here at HQ from seven Flemington assignments and chases a hat-trick.
Was found out by the classy Treasurethe Moment when dead last in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes over the Caulfield mile but quickly atoned back in grade to secure back-to-back wins in Ballarat’s Country Oaks and a BM100 over 2000m here with 58.5kg on her back on ANZAC Day.
Back up against tougher rivals now but comes off a winning trial and Declan Bates’s strike-rate on her is impressive.
Don’t think she’ll win with the 1400m short of her preferred and she’ll need the run, but she’ll be doing her best work late and has the ability to go past a few more than the markets suggest.
